What you need to o know (Basic Rules) - The Basic Premise of Blackjack is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. The other players at the table are of no value to you. (YET). You are basically playing against the dealer. In Blackjack, it is ok for others to se your cards. It is the dealer that will keep one hidden.
What do the Cards Mean or what values to they have - All cards 1-9 are valued as such. the 10, jack, queen, king are all valued at 10. The Ace can either be a 1 or an 11 depending on your other card. You can chose what you want this to be. Lets talk about the ace. The Ace can be a 1 or an 11. You never have to tell what you want the ace to be valued at as it is understood every time it is the number that makes the hand the best. When dealing with an ace in your hand, it can either be soft or hard. Soft means you can hit (request another card from the dealer) and it would be impossible for you to bust (go over 21). Example, the dealer deals and you get a 4 and an ace. You have a "soft" 15. We are assuming that the ace is an 11. Now you hit because you know you can't bust and the dealer gives you an 10. You now have a 10, ace, and a 4: You have a hard 15. At this point you can chose to hit again or stay (settle with the cards and the dealer will now play his hand).
The dealer and the choices he makes - The dealer is the last one to start the process of playing his hand. Luck for us the dealer must follow a specific set of rules that he can not sway from. The dealer must stand on all 17's. A very common rule. If the dealer has an ace, it is always assumed that it will be an 11 and is not required to hit on say a soft 17. The dealer must hit on 16, and if the dealer busts, that's great for us.
Strategy of Blackjack - OK, I am going to tell you how I play and has done very well for me. Remember, you also need luck in this game. You need to make a decision on whether or not you stay or hit on the sum of cards totaling 16. For example, if you have a 5,6,5=16, do you stay or hit. Whichever you pick, stay with that decision forever. If you keep switching back and forth, you will end up losing more than you win. If the dealer is showing 2,3,4,5,6 I consider those "bust cards". I am assuming he has a 10, jack, ect (anything valued at 10) and he will have to hit again and usually bust. I am always assuming that the dealer has a 10 or something valued as such that I can not see. So if he is showing a 7,8,9,10, ect. I know I am going to want to hit until i get a value of cards that is close to 21. The secret of this game is to have the dealer loose. Don't worry about anyone else at the table. I have stayed on 12 before, just because I feel the dealer will bust and that is the object.
